Rainbow lorikeets are some of Australia’s most beautiful birds. Like most neighbourhood birds, they can be seen to fly in pairs throughout the day. Before sunset these birds congregate on the branches of the berry trees. Last Saturday, I took my camera to a nearby park to take some shots of these gorgeous birds. Fortunately, I was able to take clear pictures of them at close range as the sun was still shining on the trees (my camera can only take clear pictures in sufficiently lighted conditions). Since my goal in capturing the picture I posted was to present the bird in clear detail, I created a very subtle bokeh by bringing out the subject while eliminating the distracting branches in the background. I realise that the bird is slightly off-centre in the picture. I thought that I could apply one of David Frazer’s tips on sunset photography (https://www.lenspiration.com/forums/topic/sunset-at-cottesloe-beach/) in capturing snapshots of birds. Below are the specs of the picture. I’m open to comments or suggestions that anyone may have for this picture.

Agreed! One of the rules of composition for living things is that you give them some space to “look into”. Your photo is a good example of that rule. Very nice shot!

Nice, I like how that turned out! Is that the same effect you used on your daffodil picture? In my opinion this one worked out a lot better, the daffodil is a little too obvious that the bokeh was applied in post-processing.
Thanks guys for the comments! I used the same bokeh effect (from Google’s Nik Collection) on the daffodil picture. I’m glad the picture was well taken and processed. @buddingphotographer, I was wondering what you actually meant by giving living things some space to “look into.” Are you referring to the off-centre positioning of the subject?

Yes! The idea is that a picture is more pleasing to the eye if the subject has some space to “look into” the frame. See the attached examples…
