ParticipantHey guys! I had an amazing opportunity last week to go to Alaska, and wanted to share some of the pictures I took with y’all!
I’ve never tried to do landscape photography before so any tip, trick or anything that could’ve been better with these pictures would be very helpful!(Side note)
I did have a polarizing filter on in all of these pictures, and all the days we were in Alaska it was raining, there was barely any sun, which made it a little more difficult for me to get the settings right since I am still not very good at getting the camera settings correctPicture no. 1

KeymasterWow!!!!! What a fantastic opportunity! So, it was like a family vacation? How did you all get up there? Did you actually drive all the way? I’m sure you guys took loads of pictures. The ones you’ve shown here are fantastic!
1. How much have you cropped this image of the eagle? I would assume you’ve cropped it considerably. If you haven’t cropped it much, then I would consider cropping in from the top and right (to get rid of that white triangle wave in the top left). The fact that there’s more space on the right is good though. In terms of sharpness and camera settings, it’s sharp so you’ve done a masterful job.
2. So sorry it was cloudy all the time for you. 🙁 Most of my days in Alaska were cloudy too. But what makes it nice is that you are less likely to blow out the sky. Texture in the sky is always nice. I might have tried to include more brilliant yellow trees on the right in this shot. Maybe not zoom in so far. The amount of “empty” space in the center seems to overwhelm the more interesting parts of the image (the road, three trees, the contour of the mountains). You might say this adds to the daunting effect that you feel with the road being so small leading to the mountain, but I feel like I want to see more road or more trees.
3. That’s right, Alaska has lots of coastline. 🙂 Good composition. The image looks blurred to me. Perhaps include more of that grass in the foreground to incorporate more depth.
4. Very interesting shot! That looks like a place I stayed at overnight with the Roberts family in Homer. It was misty and everything. The fact that the background is pure white gives the effect of mystery and a “closed in” feeling. If it was a pretty background, I would have tried to bring it back in post processing for a more grand landscape shot.
5. This is my favorite of the five. Great subject. Great composition. I feel you’ve edited it nicely too, high contrast but not too high contrast. You’ve brought out the details in both dark and light areas. Where was this taken?

ModeratorBeautiful pictures! I’m glad James already critiqued them, cause that’s not really down my alley, but I enjoyed looking at them anyway! 🙂

We flew up to Alaska for our friends wedding actually! But only my mom, my two older sisters and I went. But it would have been so amazing if my whole family was able to go!! My little siblings would’ve thought it was amazing with all the mountains and everything! Especially since we saw 7 moose!!
I actually don’t think this picture is cropped at all? I can’t remember right now, I was very close to the eagles. But I see what you are saying with the wave!:) Thank you very much!!
Okay! 👌🏻
I actually think that picture is a little blurry 😶
That picture was taken in Homer!! Wow that’s so cool! We stayed in Homer Ak for the wedding!
Okay! I will definitely try to remember all these tips next time I’m taking pictures! It’s one of my favorites too! Thank you so much! This picture was taken a little outside of Homer, in Ninilchik I believe? The eagle picture was taken at the same beach as this lighthouse picture was actually.

KeymasterThere were no eagles around when I was there. Lucky you!
There was a cute little lighthouse there in Homer I took pictures of. I don’t know if it’s even on Google Maps! I’ll have to add it to the Scouting Guide.
It would have been fun to stop at the lighthouse in Ninilchik….maybe you could add it to the Scouting Guide so I’ll know to stop there next time! 🙂
