Here’s a shot from our recent trip to Mexico. On our way back we drove through the Salt River Canyon in AZ. The road was incredibly convoluted and kept doubling back on itself. There were lot’s of pull-offs along the way, and we stopped quite often to look and take pictures. To get this shot I had to go down the hill a way into the rocks. I actually took the photo from the top of a large boulder, and as a result, there’s a self-portrait in the frame!
I like the blend of old and new; the yucca plants and shrubs, vs. the modern new bridge across the river.

That looks like a fun place to drive through and take pictures! And I like the subtle elements in this particular picture that you mentioned. 🙂
I think shooting with a slightly warmer white balance would make this a better shot. Though it does appear to be a little earlier or later than “midday”, the light is still pretty cool, especially in the foreground shadow areas. Deserts in general look better in warmer hues.
Compositionally speaking, I’m glad you used the yucca plant as a sort of frame on the left. It may have made for a more dynamic foreground element if it was not partially covered by the one closer to you.
Makes me want to go visit Arizona!
