Hey!
Awhile ago I organised all my photos using Lightroom, but I still haven’t gotten around to actually backing them up on hard drives. . . I still have really full SD cards (which I’ve been having nightmares about! 😉 ) that aren’t backed up anywhere. So I really want to do that as soon as possible. The only thing is, is that I’m a bit unsure of how to do it and really don’t want to accidentally clear my Lightroom catalog or something. 🙂 Do you think you could give a bit of a step by step tutorial of how to do it on Saturday? I have 2 hard drives. Also, do you do it so that the photos are cleared off of your computer and are only on the hard drives, so you have to plug the hard drive in to access the photos? I was thinking that would be good since my computer is running out of space, but I want to know how you do it.
Also, if I recall correctly, did you say that you use sinkback to sink the photos of the catalog with the hard drives? If that makes sense. 🙂

I just want to say a BIG thankyou for explaining how to do that! It wasn’t so hard after all and now pretty much all my photos are backed up on a hard drive. What a relief! 😀 I’m now enjoying empty SD cards! 🙂 Now, I just have to put them on my second hard drive, which I hope to do this week!
I do have another question though, in regard to Lightroom catalogs. How do I back them up? Can I cut it and put it on my hardrive or is that going to seriously confuse Lightroom?! 🙂 Is there a way that I can have the Lightroom catalog on my hardrive so that I could open it on any computer that I want to? The normal laptop that I use might be on its last legs, so to speak, so I want to be able to access the catalog on a different device plus have it backed up. 🙂

And yes! Your Lightroom catalog can live on your hard drive instead of your computer.
Just close your catalog, Cut and Paste it over to the external hard drive, and then change LRs “Back Up” location! Here’s a little YouTube video showing how I’d do it: https://youtu.be/p_gxAmA4CSI

How often do you back up your catalogue? I often push skip this time, but should I be backing up more often? With the back up file, if my Lightroom catalogue was to crash, does that have all the information (edits, keywords etc) in it? How does that work?
Plus, when I was putting my catalogue on my hard drive it said there was 22,000 files in my catalogue. Since I only have about 8,000 photos on there, what are they? I’m guessing they’re supposed to be there, but was wondering what they are!
