February 6, 2023 at 11:04 am #74740Allison EstabrookParticipant@warrior-princess near golden hour would be a good time! Using the light as backlight can help create a glow.
February 6, 2023 at 12:26 pm #74763Lydia BennettKeymasterYep, 100% – backlight during golden hour is what you’re going to want to shoot for!

February 7, 2023 at 5:31 pm #74879Lydia BennettKeymasterOh and just a little backlight tip for everyone if you’re shooting with a wide aperture…
If you want to keep a “hazy” feeling out of your backlit photos, you’re going to want to make sure the sun isn’t directly coming into your lens. If the end of the lens is shaded (either by a lens hood, by an actual shadow, or by an object blocking the sun), it’ll cut the haze. Conversely, if you want the sun flare (when done well, it’s not a bad effect), then allow the sun to come into the end of your lens.
February 7, 2023 at 8:03 pm #74881Warrior PrincessParticipant@lenspirationlydia I actually was just experimenting not 10 minutes ago with avoiding the direct sunlight coming into my lens! This puts my thoughts into better words than I could write for my notes. 🙂
February 10, 2023 at 7:09 am #74917R KufeldtParticipantHere are my photo submissions. Since I’m new to photography forgive me if these photos don’t utilize backlighting. I tried my best but I couldn’t find a nice subject that would go well with the photo assignment and I’m unfamiliar with how to use backlighting. Unfortunately I took a picture with my moms car in the background and didn’t notice until later. I tried cropping it but I don’t think it is the right dimensions. I hope to submit more photos when the sun comes out so if any of you have suggestions I would love it!

February 13, 2023 at 10:14 am #75135Lydia BennettKeymasterWelcome to Lenspiration, @flamewriter! Yes, you’ve utilized backlighting in all these photos! Backlighting is when the direction of light is coming from behind your subject.
Keep looking for picturesque locations to shoot, and finding ways to simplify scenes! Often you can crop out distractions when you’re out there with the camera simply by zooming in, or re-positioning yourself to block or hide distracting elements.
