I own a Nikon D5300, which is a crop body, and half of my lenses are full-frame lenses (Nikon 50mm 1.8 af-s, Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC USD). I really like them both!
Just to be clear… a 50mm “crop lens” will take exactly the same picture as a 50mm “full-frame lens” on your camera. The confusion arises from the fact that a 50mm lens on a crop body takes a picture similar to what a 75mm lens would on a full-frame body. So we say that 50mm on a crop body is “equivalent to” a 75mm lens.
The important thing to note about buying full-frame lenses for Nikon crop bodies is that most Nikon crop bodies (including your Nikon D3100) do not have a built-in focus motor. This means it is important to get lenses that do have a built-in focus motor. For example, get the 50mm f/1.8 af-s, not the 50mm f/1.8 af.
Hope this helps…
