Though the pictures I love the most are one of landscapes, I find the easiest to take are closeups. But even here I could use a lot of improvement. Any comments? My camera is a NIKON 3100 and I’m using an 18-55mm lens.

– exp. 1/125 sec.But I do try at scenes, though they are harder for me to shoot. Here’s a picture I took of a waterfall in a deep gorge. I think it would have looked nicer if the setting sun were on it, but the gorge is so deep that isn’t a possibility. I would love some input.

Pine cone shot it nice. I would have upped the exposure on the pine cone and maybe added a vignette to the image and a few exposure adjustments.
The waterfall needs a better background or work the scene to get a better image. It feels like the camera should have been pointed down further to see whats going on at the bottom of the falls.

Really love the pine cone image. The warm sunlight is awesome. The pine cone, the subject, is too far into the bottom right corner. Too much empty background. Love how the cone is partially hidden by foreground needles but the shape is still obvious. Perhaps less needles in front.
This waterfall is perfectly set up for a vertical composition. Using the rocks on the right as your main, foreground anchor, filling the background with the trickle of water coming down off the canyon wall. Glad it’s so sharp. Long exposure but no camera shake! When you’re in the valley with no sunlight, make sure to change your white balance to a shade preset. This image has a very cool cast.
