Lydia BennettKeymasterYay! The angles on the dog are much improved! What you’re doing here with getting down on the dog’s level is great! It would be just perfect if the dog didn’t have its head turned away 😀
Is there any location you could take pictures at that might have a nicer, more artistic or simple background?
That last photo I think is my favorite. I’d try to take a similar shot again, just with the dog looking at you, and with a simple, distraction-free background. Shoot it a little brighter and warmer (adjust your camera settings so it’ll look closer to what’s attached), and you’re on to something!
Keep at it, Brieanna!

ParticipantThank you, Lydia!
I actually meant to have him turn his head away because I love my dog’s profile. 😉
Next time I’ll make sure to have him turn toward me, though, and will keep in mind to bring him to a simple background to shoot him against! How did you edit the last photo so beautifully? I love that his fur is still distinct, but not so shadowed!
Thanks so much for your encouragement, Lydia. I really appreciate the guidance you gave. 🙂

James StaddonKeymasterI appreciate your persistence, @warrior-princess! I’m glad you’re figuring out how to get the forums to work for you.
The posture, composition, angle, and lighting are really nice in 20221013_11384514.jpg. The other photos of the dog in the shade are too great a dynamic range to get the nice color in the background as well as detail in the fur. The centered composition works here since you have leading lines of various types pointing in toward the dog. The colors are vibrant because of the angle of light. The horizon needs to be straightened, though. And the background simplified somehow if you really wanted a not-snapshot-like photo. Or, instead of simplified, making it part of the story of the photo. The only reason we think of the background elements as being distractions is because they don’t relate to the “story” of the photo. If somehow you could create a photo that had a story of something like “my dog in a park” feeling, then the background would not be distracting looking. That’s where creativity, experience, experimenting come in. 🙂

Participant@jamesstaddon Thanks so much for your guidance as well! I am thrilled that I can glean wonderful tutoring tailored just for some specific photos of mine. I have never found that anywhere else. /
God bless you and all the others who have been helping me press on.

I mainly raised the exposure and warmed up the white balance! Also pulled out the shadows just a tad.

ParticipantWhat software do you use? Do you think it would be a good purchase if I bought Affinity Photo?

ParticipantI got a few free photo editor trials after my last message, and after quickly figuring out that two were my favourites, I edited the same photo two different ways- one in PhotoDirector 14, and one in On1 Photo RAW 2023. Both turned out amazing, but I am still unsure which software to buy out of the two!
Does anyone have a recommendation one way or the other?

ParticipantAnd this one was edited first basically, and second dramatically, in On1 Photo RAW 2023…

James StaddonKeymasterI am really glad you are able to experiment with both of these programs, @warrior-princess! I do not use either, so I would not be able to help you know which one is better. I think it would work to just choose the one you felt was the most comfortable to use. I do remember liking the layout of Photo Director. However, I think On1 is more advanced, probably with more features. I think On1 would be the one I’d go with since I think it is more of a digital asset manager, similar to Lightroom, in that it allows you to both organize and edit your photos?
