ParticipantHello everyone!
I was wondering if you would help me come up with a name for my future photography business! I would love to think up one now so I can start watermarking my photos.
I have thought up these, and hope you all can help me think up some new names.
*Faithful Witness Photography
*Dreamsight Photos
*Dreamsights Photography
*Golden Hour Studios
*Golden Hour PhotographyThank you!

ParticipantThose are some really picturesque and creative ideas! Any one of them could work, and work well.
Here is one name idea that is really common, (and for good reasons)
YourFirstName YourLastName Photography. (or photos, or some variant thereof)
This isn’t a good idea if your name is Mahershalalhashbaz, nor if it’s John Doe. (too unusual, or too common) However, this idea, used by countless photographers, does three things at once.
#1. When people contact you for a job, they know who they’re trying to get hold of. No time wasted.
#2. When people see the name, they feel like they’re dealing with a real person.
#3. It makes your company unique, and stand out. Not too many people will have your name and be photographers.
Just for kicks, I did a DuckDuckGo search for famous nature photographers and found a list of 20. At least 15 out of the 20 on the list used their own name, rather than something “more creative.”Just a thought. Again, you’ve got some great ideas there; I just hope to add one more.
Hope this helps,
WilliamJanuary 16, 2023 at 8:20 pm #74243Warrior Princess
ParticipantThanks, William! Although my heart is set on a creative name, as I have already weighed the pros/cons of each.

ParticipantWatermarking photos is so fun! Being a bit of a ‘Google-er’ myself, I found this website https://www.shopify.com/tools/business-name-generator/photography which has some tips about choosing a photography business name, and a list of name ideas:-)
I may post here again if I think of any other name that you might like to add to your ‘ideas’ list🙂

ParticipantChoosing a name for your business is a big step, and a topic the Bible has plenty to say about!
Prov 22:1 “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches”
Ecclesiastes 7:1 “A good name is better than fine perfume”Obviously, the “name” in this context is referring to one’s reputation more that simply one’s legal personal or legal business name, but the two are tied together, and people make an association between names and reputations, for better or for worse. (Would you name your child Adolf?)
Something to consider when naming your business anything other than your legal name is that you will probably want to register your business with the Secretary of State’s office / Business Bureau. There is no point in settling on a business name and then having someone else register it.
Personally I would agree with @cheesestick that it would be simplest to just use your first and/or last name, as it is almost always easier to remember a person’s name than a company name. Most of your first clients will know you personally or be referred by someone that knows you. People will say, “You should get Brieanna to take your family photo!”, not “You should hire Faithful Steward Photographers.” But it is entirely up to you, and you can certainly choose the name you want!
Here are a few of things to consider …
– “Studios” should probably only be used if you actually have a physical studio.
– Make sure if you are just starting that you do not choose a restrictive name. For example, “Waterfall Photography” may be great at first, but if you eventually specialise is automobile photography it would seem a bit odd.
– “Golden Hour” only happens outdoors, and only on clear days.
– If you have a name that is less easy to remember or often misspelt (like Katelyn Smythe), you could consider using your abbreviations, like KS photos. (That would be neat if you did wedding photography…) 🙂
– Make sure that the name you choose is not already someone else’s website, especially not another photographer’s website, as that could cause confusion.January 18, 2023 at 2:36 pm #74258James Staddon
KeymasterThese are all some excellent considerations! Perhaps in the brainstorming it could help if you knew the kinds of photography you want the name to encompass. Like, are you wanting to focus mainly on family portraiture? Or do you want something broader to encompass portraiture and architecture and landscape and commercial and any other photography job you are able to land as you get stated? The answer to this would determine whether or not some of your suggestions were possibilities. If it’s something more specific, it might open up more options. If it’s something more broad, then it allows you to use something that is more associated with your personality.

ParticipantThank you, @laura-aome, @dfrazer, and @jamesstaddon!
I have a lot of food for thought now!
@laura-aome, Thanks for the generator link!
@dfrazer, I totally agree about registering my business name.
Your point about having people referring others to me gave me the idea of perhaps having my name be something like “Brieanns’s Dream Photography”!
Yes, I don’t want other photographer’s sites coming up when someone searches for my services.
@jamesstaddon, I would love to have a name that encompasses a few types of photography, as I definitely want to do portraiture, landscape/travel photography. and possibly other kinds as I go further down the path of my photography journey.January 18, 2023 at 3:27 pm #74260Warrior Princess
ParticipantAny ideas of a name that uses my first name Brieanna as part of it?
(also, @dfrazer, “studios” is definitely out, as I don’t want to have a physical studio right now. Thanks for the insight on that).February 3, 2023 at 4:00 pm #74716Laura Lane
ParticipantHey Brieanna!
How about “Brieanna’s Dreamy Snaps” as another option to consider?!

KeymasterI agree with what James said…as you further figure out what photography services you want to offer and develop a style, that should help in figuring out what name to give a business.
Also, just be thinking about what associations certain words might have. For example, if you have “dream” in your name, I would expect your photos to feel dreamy: soft, maybe sparkly, lightweight, without much depth. Either that or I’d picture that I’m getting a luxury, “dream-come-true” experience with this photographer. Those are some mental pictures that come to mind personally.

Participant@lenspirationlydia What do you think I should do, then? Here is my website that I am in the process of building. What names do you think would suit my style?

Keymaster@warrior-princess, personally, I actually think what you’ve got there, Photos by Brieanna, is a great place to start!
