The only technical things I know I read here on the forms. So I have a technical question.
I’ve been researching buying a laptop and found this one. Do you think it’s quality and is it a good buy? Does anyone have any recommendations for laptops?
Also has anyone ever used a credit card’s extended warranty? And what cards can you get it on?
Thanks a lot!
August 17, 2020 at 6:57 pm #53263Ezra MorleyModeratorThat looks like a pretty nice laptop with pretty nice specs for the price! I haven’t been pricing laptops lately, but I’d say that’s a decent deal. Note that it does not have a CD/DVD drive if that is something that’s important to you. (Of course, there’s also the option to buy an external CD/DVD drive if you need one).
I always check here for sales on laptops: https://www.dealnews.com/c49/Computers/Laptops/ (I took a look, and couldn’t find any sale on a similarly specc’ed laptop that would give a better deal.)
If you’re going to be doing photo/video editing you definitely want one with an SSD. This laptop you found has a small one, but it won’t really help much with video editing, since the Windows 10 OS and additional software will take up most of that space. For video work you’ll probably want a 500GB or 1TB SSD. Again, here’s dealnews to the rescue to find you a good price. 🙂 https://www.dealnews.com/c473/Computers/Storage/Hard-Drives/Internal-Hard-Drives/f1284/SSD/
Sorry, I can’t help you with credit card questions… 😐
August 17, 2020 at 7:15 pm #53264Blessings CapturedParticipantThank you so much!
So would you change out the SSD if I needed to?
August 17, 2020 at 7:42 pm #53265Ezra MorleyModeratorCertainly! I’d recommend doing it right away though, then you won’t have to configure your new computer twice. 🙂
August 17, 2020 at 8:37 pm #53266Blessings CapturedParticipantThank you!
Would this one work for that laptop?I read a little about SSDs. If I got a 1tb SSD would that mean I’d only need to get an external hard drive for backup and if I ran out of memory?
Thanks again!

Nope, that’s a regular HDD, not an SSD. 🙁 The specs say: “Storage Drive Type: HDD”
The title should clearly say “SSD” if that’s what it is. Another clue is when you look in the specs and it says “5400 rpm”: that’s a sign of a (spinning) platter disk, not a solid state disk.
The first one you linked to is more like what you want. I’ve never used that brand before, (I’ve always used Samsung or Crucial SSDs) but it looks like reviews aren’t too bad. Samsung has the best reviews, but they’re $20-30 more. Looks like Crucial is only $9 more.
I just realized you could go with something like this and keep your 1 TB hard drive in for (slower) storage as well! (This would replace the 128 GB SSD drive that comes with it, and leave the 1 TB SATA drive in place.) They’re more expensive per GB than the SATA SSD drives, but they can theoretically give you a lot faster performance. It’s up to you. 🙂
August 18, 2020 at 7:53 am #53270Blessings CapturedParticipantThanks! I’ll have to look for those clues.
So if I went with the Sabrent one I’d get 1tb more storage and faster performance?
August 18, 2020 at 10:36 am #53271Ezra MorleyModeratorSo if I went with the Sabrent one I’d get 1tb more storage and faster performance?
Correct, if you get a 1 TB Sabrent SSD to replace the small 128 GB SSD that comes with the machine, then you’d have a total of 2 TB of storage in your laptop: 1 TB of slow storage, and 1 TB of super speedy storage. 🙂
August 18, 2020 at 11:37 am #53274Blessings CapturedParticipantThat sounds good. Would this one be the best one to go with?
Thank you for all your advice and time!

Thank you for all your advice and time!I think so. I can’t guarantee it though, because it’s extremely difficult to find information about compatibility for these Lenovo laptops for some reason. 🙁 If you want guaranteed compatibility, you’re better off going for the regular SATA SSD (which would completely replace the 1 TB HDD that comes with the laptop.)
I also just realized that the Sabrent doesn’t have the most stellar reviews on Amazon. Overall, I think I’d feel safer going with a “regular” SATA drive with better ratings. (i.e. a Crucial or Samsung SSD.) Or even the TEAMGROUP one that you found on sale, if you don’t mind going for a “bargain” model. 🙂
August 19, 2020 at 7:07 pm #53308Blessings CapturedParticipantIs this laptop a good one?
August 19, 2020 at 9:25 pm #53316Ezra MorleyModeratorYep, that looks like a good one! It’s a lot more expensive, but it has a higher resolution screen, and more built-in SSD storage. The processor is probably a bit better/faster too.
August 20, 2020 at 1:35 pm #53325Blessings CapturedParticipantThank you so much for all your help! How does this one look?
August 20, 2020 at 3:39 pm #53331Ezra MorleyModeratorThat’s a nice one too! I’d recommend more than 8GB of RAM though, for video work, and I’d choose the 256GB SSD over the 1 TB HDD since it doesn’t cost any more.
(Unless you plan to upgrade the SSD separately).
