Hi! 🙂
Our family is going on a vacation to Israel in 6 weeks and I’m thinking that I’d like to get a telephoto lens before we go. I currently have the Canon 70-200mm f/4, but I find that I’m always wishing for a longer zoom for nature etc. I found the Tamron AF 100-400mm F4.5-6.3 Di VC USD – Canon and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this lens or any thoughts on whether it looks like a good lens? I haven’t done heaps of research on it, but from what I’ve read and watched it seems like a fairly good lens for the price. Obviously it doesn’t have some of the nicer features of the Canon lenses with equivalent focal lengths, but the price of those puts me off at the moment. 😅 Anyway, just thought I’d check here to see if anyone has any thoughts or other recommendations before I go purchasing anything.

I was personally leaning toward the Sigma version, but it seems the the camp is pretty much divided between the two brands. Both are about 800$ USD. If you are looking for a birding lens another option is the Sigma 150-600f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM, which is about 1000$ USD. Having said that, my research is about 2-3 years out of date.
I’d love to hear other people’s opinions too!

They have their downsides, of course. Here’s an article that discusses the main pros and cons. (for canon)

Hope this helps,

The 2x extender is fantastic for my 70-200mm f/2.8. The only drawback is that aperture falls back to f/4.0. However, for the 70-200mm f/4.0, Canon’s 2x extender causes that lens to no become an f/8 lens and autofocus does not carry over.

I haven’t had any experience with them, so that’s really good to know about how the aperture is affected. I have the 70-200mm f/4.0, so the aperture being f/8 would be a pretty big drawback for me. I ended deciding to go ahead and buy the Tamron 100-400mm after seeing some pretty good reviews online. 🙂 Looking forward to trying it out!
