Great shot, @dancope. The 12mm gives me the feeling of the immensity of the location, more like I’m actually sitting or standing on the rocks. Whether you’d want a different focal length or not probably just depends on the message you were hoping to communicate.
Thank-you @jamesstaddon, @nasa, @buddingphotographer, and @dfrazer for your comments! The positive pressure on the 50mm was fantastic for helping me take the plunge and actually order it. It is now attached to my camera and I’ve had fun with it already! 🙂
@nasa, no worries at all on the ramble. I know next to nothing about flashes, so it was most helpful! @buddingphotographer, thanks for the article! It’s going to be a great resource as I figure out working with a flash. @dfrazer, your pictures were instrumental in helping me realize I wanted to be able to take my flash off camera. And the recommendation of a reading a photography book is great – I did some fresh photography reading soon after reading your thoughts and hope to continue.I finally made a decision last week and ordered the second one @nasa recommended. And it arrived today!!! The box is awaiting my excited opening. The funny part is – I have a short space of time to figure out how to use it. I’m on call for informal family photos a day or two Thanksgiving week. Nothing quite like a deadline! 🙂
@jamesstaddon, wow! Thank-you! Just sent them over by email as just the actual photo. Due to computer space I currently shoot in JPEG so the file size is smaller than a RAW image. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if they didn’t come through or won’t come out of the email. (Sent from a Mac operating system.)
The goal is for at least one of these to be used for our product blog and its email list. When I switch to shooting for Christmas, those will also be used for the same outlet – and probably the shop as well, which is a bigger project. And, just maybe we’ll get a slider on our home page this next season, so Christmas pictures could be all over. 🙂

@jamesstaddon, Thanks for your input. I’m sorry I missed it on the actual day (was in NC on a family vacation!) and just sat down to watch most of the webinar today. Very helpful. After your advice on getting a lens with a lower aperture I wanted to make the purchase today – but am deciding to wait for at least one more day due to a second follow up question: what is a good speed light to start with? If they happen to be from the same company, I might be able to save time by doing a one stop shopping trip.
And thanks for your input on the second question. Excellent advice. Lenspiration’s Scriptural foundation is something I greatly appreciate. I’m delighted to think about focusing on what I love (that the Lord also does) rather than spending lots of time trying to dissect a certain style. This is way easier! Thanks for the encouragement.

A follow up question I’d be interested to get your thoughts on is if you would consider a homeschool convention where you were a vendor to be a ‘public’ place or place of ‘business’? I’m looking to share pictures of people visiting our stall for editorial purposes and am pondering how that would work since I’m not a convention photographer…at one of our last events I just asked the mom if I could use the picture of my sisters and me with one of her daughters. Not only did she agree – she even emailed a picture she’d taken! 🙂 Perhaps it depends on the situation…in that case it was a specific set up…

Great question! I was privileged to be a part of PRO for two months last year and just signed up again this July. 🙂
PRO is a fantastic resource for learning photography! It is largely self-directed, so the amount of in-depth training one receives is highly dependent on the kind of questions one asks and the actual photography work one challenges oneself to do! 🙂
If you’re brand new to photography, I’d suggest checking out the free ebook with it’s resources. Then I’d consider signing up for PRO with the plan to also work through the Lenspiration Photography Course (a discount is offered in PRO, I believe!! 🙂 ) for the first few months of your PRO membership. Then you’ll have material to spring board questions for the Q&A sessions (James is great at answering questions!) and get a great grounding in the basics of photography.
If you’re already comfortable with your camera settings, familiar with the rules of composition and looking to use your photography for a specific purpose (business, ministry, family events) then I’d suggest diving into PRO for a couple months to see how you like it and if it’s helpful! So far for me, it’s been totally worth it! 🙂

Absolutely, @jamesstaddon. I was using two soft boxes as my primary sources of light. My set up was in our basement, so I had some fluorescent light as well, but it wasn’t directly over the set. However the fluorescent light in our basement seems to be more yellow in hue…or maybe that’s because the paint on the walls is warmer in tone? The set up also had a white backdrop of a tablecloth on top of white poster boards. 🙂
I was shooting with a Canon 7D and a 28-135mm lens. In this shoot I wasn’t shooting in RAW. (Trying to save space on my computer…needing to start planning for some extra external memory! 🙂 )
Here’s a picture I snapped on my phone of the set when it was set up for video (so no table cloth…and yes, highly sophisticated overhead tripod! 🙂 ). Hopefully it’ll give you an idea of the lighting situation!

@austinvinar, currently my photography work centers on stock/blog and product photography. At this point I’m not shooting portraits regularly or shooting weddings, so having the newest version of Lr isn’t a high priority for me. 🙂
You mentioned GIMP in your post earlier! I’m curious to know if it layers pictures (multiple shots of the same set with varied exposures – is that what you meant?) and if it allows you to add words on top of pictures?
