ParticipantOoooo! This is one of my very favourite assignments. I can’t wait to see what I can do with this inspiration!! 🙂
@jamesstaddon My favourites of yours are the first and fourth. 🙂September 4, 2023 at 4:11 am #81396Nathaniel Hendry
ParticipantThis is a photo I took while on assignment for my university newspaper, the Collegian. The cross is a replica of the one made from debris at Ground Zero on 9/11. The photo won first place news photo from the South Carolina Press Association’s contest for newspapers from colleges with less than 5,000 students.

Participant@jamesstaddon Thanks! I am not as thrilled about the other merged one, haha. I have never done anything like merging two photos together, but I am glad one turned out good!!

KeymasterI wanted to try for a more landscape-style shot with this assignment. Originally I was hoping to find a picturesque barn with a huge flag on its side, or a quaint white country church with an American flag hanging from it, but I have not come across one of those in my area yet.
So, next I had an idea to incorporate a Bible and flag on a bench. Last night, I set out to a bench in a local park to try to get this idea. The most difficult part was making it look somewhat natural. The other difficulty was that I arrived a bit late and sunlight was fading. If I had been able to make it an hour earlier there would’ve been some beautiful golden hour light to work with. So, I took some wide shots, and then came in close to capture details.

ParticipantThis week we went on a family “fieldtrip”, on the way we drove past the tallest cross in North America. And it had a flag pole! Of course, we had to stop for assignment pictures.
Up close, it was difficult to include both the flag and the cross with a square crop. Across the exit it was easier to get a square crop, but I felt like it was harder to be artistic. It was fun to see how the Lord gave us a surprise photo opportunity that was timed perfectly for the assignment!

ParticipantI’m really thankful that I was able to do this assignment! I absolutely loved taking pictures for this!
I went out in the evening, about at golden hour. Thankfully our gardens flowers were in bloom, and they were incorporated into the photos.
The one with the american flag at the back and the bible in front on the ground with flowers on it is my favorite. The two red flowers represent Jesus blood, poured out for us, and the white flower represents redemption, and being washed clean.
