Early Sunday morning had that golden glow, and it made all the difference in being “light and airy”.
I had him wear blue because I noticed that the Journey’s website had a blue theme.
A big Thank you to my model for being willing to pose for me-twice!
-HannahJuly 12, 2022 at 7:30 pm #71353Hannah F.Participant@BlessingsCaptured, love the first photo because first there is more focus on the Bible rather than the person and second, love the bokeh (I’m pretty sure you know what that is!). Lovely bokeh! Creative idea for your subject to wear blue to match the organization’s theme. Great attention to details. Yes, bokeh makes things so light and airy, great way to put it! I’m sure that you took the Sunday morning photo during golden hour, which is great! Golden hour really makes photos, well, golden! 😀
I am very determined to not miss this photo assignment!! Will be working on it soon!
Note: For other readers who read this, bokeh is the effect when a camera’s aperture is set wide-open such as f/2.5-3.5. Having a wide-open aperture allows as much light to enter the camera, causing the camera to blur filtered light or the background of a subject, creating the effect that we call bokeh. The bokeh is the ball-like effect we see on the light, generally through filtered light such as light pouring in through the trees. Some photographers pronounce “bokeh” like “bo-ca,” while others pronounce it as “bouquet,” as in a bouquet of flowers.

July 13, 2022 at 10:17 am #71367Lydia BennettKeymasterLove it!! I think it’s great that both of you took a look at Journey’s website to see more particulars on how to shoot for their ministry specifically. Great attention to detail!
@esther, does this forum thread help answer your question?July 14, 2022 at 1:27 pm #71372allie worrallParticipantJuly 15, 2022 at 10:55 am #71382Lydia BennettKeymasterWow, what a great location for your photos, @allieworrall! So happy to see you participating in this assignment! 🙂
I would like to know how to make the shadows less intense
Great question! Are you familiar with shooting in Full Manual or in any of the semi-manual modes (like Shutterspeed Priority or Aperture Priority)?

July 18, 2022 at 9:42 am #71415Jemima Janse van RensburgParticipantI love the photo of the boy praying! It’s so sweet!😊 Is he your brother @esther ?
July 18, 2022 at 3:27 pm #71421Lydia BennettKeymaster@allieworrall, shooting in manual gives you control over your camera settings, so you can tell the camera what settings to use instead of it deciding for itself! 🙂 It’s a game-changer when you know how to do this!
I’d highly recommend that you download the Phase I workbook from the Lenspiration Photography Program here. Even if you don’t go at the rate the workbook recommends, this will give you a great place to work from! Starting in “Week One” of that workbook, you’ll be given the tools you need to start taking control of your camera!
The shadows in your picture are intense because of the high contrast in the lighting. In the direct sunlight like that, you’ll want to shoot with backlighting (so, face your sister towards her shadow and make sure you are facing the direction of the sun). And then adjust your camera settings so the shadow areas are brighter and the background overexposes. Shooting in the early morning or late afternoon is also helpful, as the lighting is naturally more beautiful during those times of day.
July 18, 2022 at 3:35 pm #71422Lydia BennettKeymasterI got together with my friend Sarah this weekend to take some pictures together for this assignment! It worked out for us to meet up around 4:30pm, and I wasn’t sure how the lighting would be that point in the afternoon since it would still be quite a bit earlier than golden hour. But it was just lovely!
We shared ideas ahead of time as to outfits and hair, and I brought my Bible and Quiet Time journal along for us to use. We didn’t end up using the journal (mainly because we ran out of time), but we got a nice variety with the Bible and some prayer images.
I’m so grateful that a daily quiet time with God isn’t just something that happens in photos, but in real, everyday life! That time in His Word and prayer is such a gift. 🙂
