Hi! This is my first time submitting a photo so I apologize if I do anything wrong 🙂 I was milking our family cow and I noticed the fog around the barn, so I decided to run to the house and pull out my camera and see what I could get. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!!

January 29, 2018 at 5:08 pm #28662Eliana FranzenburgParticipantWow! I really like those 🙂 The only thing I would change on the first one crop it in so you can’t see the second horse because it’s kind of distracting from the main subject. And the second photo is pretty with the way the fog shows up but there is so much going on (the horse, the trees) that it just isn’t that eye grabbing of a picture.
Just an idea if you had gotten down from a lower angle and zoomed in more it could make a much more interesting subject with the trees blurred as the the background.January 29, 2018 at 5:54 pm #28663John MachenParticipantI agree with @elianafranzenburg about getting on a lower angle. Really nice pics overall! One thing I noticed was the second photo was a little over exposed. I played around with it a little in editing and attached the result. Also it seems that if the horse in the first pic had its head turned a little to the right it would be perfect. Do you typically edit your photos? I’ve found a little editing goes a long way. 🙂 Also just curious, where do y’all have a farm?
January 29, 2018 at 8:54 pm #28665Joseph CamusoParticipant@dara__cochran, Nice photos!
I really like the first one. Perhaps decreasing your aperture would give a nice bokeh behind the horse. @hayhand02, I like your edit, it helps to bring out more detail in the picture.January 30, 2018 at 9:43 am #28670Ryan MadarisParticipant@dara__cochran, I would straighten the first photo a bit, and I would also use a larger aperture of about f/4 to blur the background a bit more. Great job with these photos!

February 1, 2018 at 1:27 pm #28731Daniel HancockParticipantI especially like the first photo, and think that the other horse in the background adds depth to the photo and makes it more interesting. What ISO did you shoot it at? Often it is better to raise your ISO to get a faster shutter speed so you have a sharper photo. 1/13 is rather slow for handheld shots or living subjects.
February 1, 2018 at 7:50 pm #28752Logan LamarParticipantWow! I love the first one! Just a couple of quick thoughts…
I agree with the other commenters—definitely open the aperture up so you can get some bokeh.
Also, it looks like the nose is just a touch out of focus. Make sure the eyes are in crisp focus, but I would make sure your depth of field (aperture) setting allows the entire face to be in focus all at once.Great pic, though. Love the fog! If there was only a way to add some breath coming from the horses nose, I think it would also add a lot!
February 7, 2018 at 3:39 pm #28828James StaddonKeymasterWay to take advantage of a picturesque situation at an otherwise ordinary (I assume) location!
I’m of the same opinion of @dhancock, I think the second horse (in the first picture) adds a sense of “community” sorta. I may have stepped to the left slightly to decrease the amount of space between them and frame the shot so both horses were slightly closer together (the one in the background away from the edge more especially).
Absolutely LOVE that second image! Keep your eye on the STS forum….the next assignment (planning to post it on Monday the 12th) is going to be something like “dreary day” and this would be a perfect submission!
