Hi!
Please tell me what you think of this photo. I took it early this year but just found your website.I used the on camera flash but other than that I didn’t do anything fancy. All I did for editing was cropping.

Very nice! What kind of flower is this? I feel I should know but can’t remember. I like the colour, and your exposure. Also the way the principle flower is “facing” into the larger part of the picture. I might have moved myself down slightly and to the left to see if I could hide the flower that is almost straight behind it; I feel like the flower might pop a little more out of the background. Also, though this is somewhat a question of taste, I might have focused slightly further into the flower. I personally feel my eye drawn to the middle part of the flower, but that is not quite in focus. Not sure what settings you used, but try experimenting around with you aperture and focal length (longer is better as a rule of thumb) to see if you can get more of the flower in focus and still get the pleasing background you achieved here.

I have no idea what kind of flower it is. Thank you for advice. I will definitely play around with the aperture and focus. When I took this picture the camera was on the Program mode and I was using auto focus.

Just a quick note because I’m picky about little details. 🙂
Using a longer focal length will get you less DOF, which in turn will make it harder to get the whole flower in focus. I’m not necessarily saying the advice is wrong, because using a longer FL will also make the “pleasing background”, you just have to choose which one you want to emphasize. 🙂Ezra, yes you will wind up with a more blurred background, but the acuity of focus will drop off less quickly initially with a longer focal length. I set it to 50mm 1.4 and 100mm 2.0 so that the apertures are physically the same size.In other words, you win twice with a longer focal length, especially when you stop down.
On a side note, I adjusted the subject size to 20cm to make it more relevant to the discussion, also changed to a lens that is more likely to be owned by the lenspiration crowd I’m guessing.

I was kind of assuming a variable aperture zoom here and/or one would stop down to get the necessary depth of field though that might not be the case.- This reply was modified 55 years, 5 months ago by .
