I am looking at upgrading my Cannon x t i to a better camera. I am looking at either the Cannon T6i or T6s. Any suggestions?
May 5, 2017 at 1:56 pm #23139Ezra MorleyModeratorHi, @sarahanne! Both the T6i and the T6s will be quite an upgrade from the XTi. It’s hard to say which camera is better without knowing a little bit about what your budget is, and what you’re expecting from your new camera. 🙂
The T6i and T6s are identical, as far as the specs for the sensor, AF, and stuff like that. It’s the outside that makes the T6s more expensive. It is made to be more “professional”, and so has extra bells and whistles which make it more expensive. The advantages of the T6s are:
- A little LCD info panel on the top of the camera
- A command dial which makes it easier to change certain settings
- HD (1280×720) HDR video
- Servo AF during video
It’s really up to you, whether or not you want to spend the extra for the T6s. If the things in the list above don’t really matter to you, then you might as well save some cash and get the T6i! 🙂
May 5, 2017 at 2:10 pm #23144Sarah LewisParticipantI am willing to spend around 800 to 900 dollars. I kinda was leaning towards the T6s. I like to do outdoor shots, portraits, and some sports. Video is pretty important also. I also looked at the T7i.I appreciate any input.;)
May 6, 2017 at 11:15 am #23164Ezra MorleyModeratorIf you already have a lens, then you can get the T6s body right now on Adorama for $699: https://www.adorama.com/icat6sa.html
If you don’t mind buying used, you can save $100, and get it from B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/801546731-USE/canon_0020c001_eos_rebel_t6s_dslr.html
If video is important, then you’ll probably want the T7i, it’s the same price as the T6s! https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1318277-REG/canon_eos_rebel_t7i_dslr.html/SUB/cpw
May 6, 2017 at 5:03 pm #23167Ezra MorleyModeratorMore options… 🙂
You can buy the T6s with the 18-135 STM (optimized for video) lens directly from Canon (refurbished) for $849. Just the lens alone sells for $350-400…
May 9, 2017 at 9:31 am #23204photog_loveParticipantHi @sarahanne! I own the T6s (and LOVE it! 🙂 ) – and although I’ve never actually shot with the T6i – I would definitely recommend the T6s over it. I really don’t end up using the top LCD panel as much as I thought I would, so the biggest difference for me between the two is the back command dial. It’s amazing – and if I ever bought another camera, one of my requirements would definitely be a command dial rather than the 4 selectors that come on the T6i. Price-wise, I bought my T6s as a refurbished body directly from the online Canon store. But that was a little while back – and now that I see the link from @buddingphotographer – you can get the body new for not too much more than what I paid for refurbished.
May 10, 2017 at 1:20 pm #23229Sarah LewisParticipantMy Dad said the T6s is a very good deal. I don’t have a lens so I will have to consider that in the cost.I am still working on earning the money right now so I am not in a hurry! My sister (@missyruth) bought her 55 to 135mm lens on eBay. Is it a good idea to buy on eBay? Or is that not a very good idea.Is there a major difference in price between T6i and T6s? I think I am leaning more towards T6s.
May 11, 2017 at 5:35 pm #23268Ezra MorleyModeratorYou can certainly buy camera equipment on ebay! The caveat is that you are at more risk of getting ripped off, (compared to buying from big name retailers like Adorama or B&H)
There are a couple of things you can do to make shopping a little safer on ebay. Check the seller’s feedback rating, if it’s less than 98% then you’re probably better off finding a different seller. Make sure the seller offers returns, you don’t want to be stuck with an expensive lemon that you can’t return! Look for ebay’s “Top Rated Plus” badge, that indicates that the seller has a good track record for fast shipping and happy customers. August 3, 2017 at 10:51 am #24922Sarah LewisParticipantI am still shopping around.
My dad has a SONY mirror-less camera. He seems to really like it and suggested I get one. Also both my older brothers have mirror-less cameras. But I don’t know if that’s something for me. Any comments on mirror-less’?August 15, 2017 at 6:12 pm #25065Sarah LewisParticipantHey, Thanks SOO much everybody. That’s all very helpful!
September 14, 2017 at 3:23 pm #25558James StaddonKeymasterHey @sarahanne, I’m back in town now and reviewing the forums here. Have you come to a good decision yet on what camera you’re going to buy? or would you still like me to do some research on mirrorless camera recommendations to talk about on the webinar on Saturday? https://www.lenspiration.com/photography-qa-with-lenspiration-sep-16/
December 6, 2017 at 8:19 pm #27575Sarah LewisParticipantHi again. You can look into it if you want to. I’m still not sure what I want yet though. Little nonplussed about buying a Sony anyway. Like Cannon very much, but Dad’s camera is very nice. So go ahead if you want. And thanks. 🙂
December 7, 2017 at 9:48 am #27646Ryan MadarisParticipant@sarahanne, I’ve not had any experience with Canon, but if you’re looking into Nikon at all, I’ve heard great things about the D7500. It’s quite expensive though…
December 7, 2017 at 3:43 pm #27649Sarah LewisParticipantOh, thank you but I wasn’t looking at Nikon at all. I’ve been raised on Cannon and wouldn’t know how to use one, besides I’ve heard that there confusing. Is that true? I’ve only used a Nikon once, it had nice quality but it took the owner ten minutes to try to get me to understand it. 🙂 But I’m taking all suggestions!
December 7, 2017 at 7:15 pm #27656Dan CopeParticipantProbably those who have told you that Nikons are confusing are those who are accustomed to using Canon or another brand. As a Nikon user I find myself confused whenever I pick up a Canon 😀 But it’s not because Canon’s are necessarily confusing, it’s simply the fact that I’m not accustomed to using one! I’m sure that if you used a Nikon you would soon be comfortable with it. But if you’re already comfortable using a Canon, you might as well stick with that unless you find and incredible deal on a Nikon that you can’t pass up!
