I absolutely love taking photos of beautiful flowers and do it quite often, so I was really excited to see the topic for this assignment! Although most of these are from my archive, I did take a couple photos of our elderberry bushes and roses.

I wholeheartedly recommend the 50mm!! I’m a portrait photographer and love this lens! It really is all in what you can/want to afford at this time. When I first started out, I was forced to work with the basics of kit lenses, but quickly invested in the 50mm, and that has been my go-to lens of choice ever since. It’s true that you step forward/backward a lot, but it’s not usually a problem for me, as I shoot my sessions outside, and have plenty of space…I’ve also gotten used to it, though. 😁
A few months ago, after lots of studying and discussing on this forum, I ordered the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 as a second choice zoom lens, and it works pretty well for being a knock-off brand (although I definitely prefer Nikon! Can’t afford it, though! 😄). I found a like-new Tamron lens on Amazon for $222 (brand new $500), so while it’s more than the 50mm, it’s not bad at all for a nice quality zoom lens for portraits. I’ve also enjoyed using this as more of an “everyday” type of lens, because of the ability to zoom in, or out, for that matter. My intent in buying the Tamron lens was to be able to use it for weddings (possibly), but I’m not quite sure if it’s worthy of wedding photography, but maybe I just haven’t used it enough…😄

The proposal photoshoot actually took place the afternoon you replied, but I didn’t read it until the day after. However, I was thankful to find out that my sister, Allie, and I did almost every little thing you said to do, which reassured us that it was handled well, even though we hadn’t ever seen, let alone photographed, a proposal. 😀 We both praised the LORD that the lighting was beautiful and we were able to capture more than enough photos of the couple. God was so good in allowing everything to work out so smoothly!
So the story goes…we met with the guy the day before and hammered out the major details, which was so necessary. Allie and I were both well hidden for the special moment and captured it on both of our cameras (so helpful to have a second photographer from a different angle!) and then I took the first photos of the couple afterwards – a mini engagement photoshoot – and she had so many different poses she wanted captured, which made it easy for me. After a little while and tons of pictures later, we finished up in around 45 minutes. It was a good experience for us, but the most nerve-racking photoshoot I’ve ever done! Haha.

Thank you for your advice. I’m so glad to hear that the Tamron 28-75mm is a good choice, because I ordered it last Friday, and am looking forward to receiving it soon! 😀

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased an 18-140mm lens, which I really like. Unfortunately, at that time, there wasn’t a refurbished 18-200mm for sale (that I could find), so I went with the 18-140. If there would’ve been one available, I probably would have purchased the 18-200 to completely replace my 55-200mm kit lens, but this one suits my needs quite well. 🙂
I was wondering about the 70-300mm and might look into that lens sometime, just to have an extra long lens on hand. How does the image quality compare to the 55-200mm?
I use Picasa and Nikon Transfer ViewNX2 and between both of them, I can generally get the effects I’m going for. My Nikon software came with my camera years ago and it does a really good job…I probably ended up paying for it after all when I bought my gear. 🙂
The 16-35mm lens would be so nice to have, especially at f/2.8! I use that aperture number all the time on my 50mm.
@buddingphotographer, It would be great to get some free software to categorize all of the pics by focal length! Thanks for looking into that!

What a neat way to keep track of all the focal lengths from picture to picture! I haven’t looked yet, but I’m just guessing my free software does not have that feature. 🙂

I agree with you on slowly investing in other lenses and would love to invest in additional lenses with lower aperture numbers in the future (yes, that is why I love my 50mm!). For the time being, I can’t afford spending a lot of money on one lens…
What lenses do you recommend I invest in? I found the 35mm f/1.8 that I’m wondering about, but since I own the 50mm, don’t know if it would be a waste or not. I certainly don’t want to just buy for the sake of having more to choose from.
I did already purchase the 18-140mm lens and the biggest reason I decided to do that was to replace the 18-55 and 55-200mm for the sake of convenience, and to just have an everyday, go-to lens for anything. As a side note, my younger sister is getting into photography, so I’ll be selling my camera and both of those lenses to her (and upgrade my camera body). That’s another reason for getting the 18-140mm.

I also have a D3100, @lydiabennett! Did you get yours refurbished or new? You would really love the 50mm lens! I had the 18-55 and 55-200 for a while before getting the 50mm and it’s my favorite. There was a huge difference in image quality!
My plan is to use this lens to capture everyday life, events and birthday parties, etc. I think the 18-140mm would do a pretty good job…especially for the price.

Thank you for pointing that out! That’s what I have heard about the focal length, as well… I think I would rather have better image quality rather than focal length, personally… With that said, I’ll plan to get the 18-140mm.
