JJLwenParticipantOk. Thank you @lenspirationlydia, that sounds great! I found a website that is super helpful in finding GPS coordinates.

JJLwenParticipantHi, what format am I supposed to use when I submit the GPS coordinates? should it be N. 11.11111, W. 11.11111? or should I say Latitude 11.11111 Longitude -11.11111? Any help is much appreciated.

JJLwenParticipantI’m hoping to still participate in this assignment. Even though I have 8 siblings and 5 younger brothers, I still haven’t had many ideas until now. I have an idea of photographing my dad at work, which would be cool.
@jenna I really like your photos! It gives me the impression of a dad at a job site, working to provide for his family. Your pictures gave me the idea, so I’ll see if it works.-Jerrell

JJLwenParticipantThanks @loganlanmar so much for all your advice! I checked out the lens rentals but it is quite expensive to ship to Alaska and I haven’t researched if there’s any local lens rental places in my area. I think I will purchase the Tokina lens eventually, but am not sure when.

JJLwenParticipantHey @loganlanmar,
Thanks for the advice! I definitely agree that one can make the composition interesting even if you don’t have a wide-angle lens. I have been able to get some decent aurora shots lately using time-lapses. I still think I will get a better wide-angle lens because sometimes I don’t have my camera pointed in the right direction during the time-lapse so I miss a bunch of aurora.
Thanks for the lens recommendations!
just curious, do you know much about Tokina lenses? I am considering purchasing a Tokina 11-16 mm f2.8 lens. Let me know if you have any experience with them or what your opinion is about the lens I mentioned.(here it is on Amazon

JJLwenParticipantHi James, I was wondering, is it ok to submit pictures of animals for this assignment if they reflect motherhood?
February 14, 2024 at 5:23 pm #85047
JJLwenParticipantI’m not quite sure what my shutter speed was, but I think it was between one and two seconds at f 1.8 or f 2. (it might have been as long as 3-5 seconds, but I can’t remember).
February 14, 2024 at 5:19 pm #85046
JJLwenParticipantYes! I have been able to catch some aroura using time-lapses.
February 14, 2024 at 1:27 pm #85043
JJLwenParticipantI am not doing seven hour exposures, that is just the maximum duration of time lapse my camera allows. I normally do 3-6 second intervals between pictures.
I described it as a dummy/adapter because it looks like a battery but plugs into the wall and isn’t an actual battery.-Jerrell

JJLwenParticipantI doubt video recording will hurt your camera, but a plug-in adapter from AC to your camera like James suggested would be great. I don’t normally do long video shots with my camera, but I frequently do 7 hr. time lapses using an AC battery dummy/adapter. I definitely am glad I purchased the dummy/adapter as I previously was only able to do two-and-a-half hour time lapses before the battery would die.
