Thanks everyone, for your input! I will definitely be coming back to this with future photoshoots as well!
The photoshoot went great! I wasn’t able to go to the location beforehand, as the family hadn’t decided till I arrived there. But I was able to find some really cool locations there, even though I had never seen the place. I did switch into auto ISO, and that was really helpful, because we went back and forth from darker settings to lighter settings. Having all my poses and groups worked out beforehand was also really helpful.
I did have a bit of trouble with getting the third little girl, who is about five, to smile. At the beginning, she was really excited, and smiled pretty naturally, but as the time wore on, she got tired of it, and so the smiles aren’t as good. So next time, I think I’ll make sure and take the individuals of the kids first, so that the kids don’t have to be the last ones to be taken pictures of and be standing around the whole time, if that makes sense.
But all in all, if went really well! I have a few more family photoshoots scheduled for this year, so I might be back with some other questions! but thank you all for your help, it was great!Thanks, @blessingscaptured! This is really helpful! 🙂

@nateb Ah, ok! Thanks for clearing that up, that’s why I didn’t recognize it. Ok, I will definitely do that! I might also look into a tripod, as well.

@loewfam I’m not sure what VR is, so I don’t know if my equipment has it. I use an EOS Rebel T7 with a 18-55 mm lens and a 75-300 mm lens. Typically, when I try to use a lower shutter speed than 1/500, I end up with a blurry picture. I would love some articles if you have any links! I also just need to go out and do some more experimenting and practicing with my camera to get a more solid diagnosis.
@nateb Thanks so much! I will try that out and see how it works. I did just go out and try shooting with a lower shutter speed, and it produced a much better picture than before. I usually have my metering set to Evaluative. I do typically shoot in almost full sun or full sun, but the times when I shoot in the shade is typically when I get frustrated with dark pictures. Thank you so much for your help! I’m still pretty new to the photography world, so I’m still trying to figure all this out 🙂@nateb So, depending on the shot, most of the time I will use between a F5.6 (which is as low as my lens goes) to about a F11 aperture, and at least a 1/500 shutter speed, sometimes more. Hopefully that is enough info.

Ok this is great! I am grateful for all the advice, it’s been really helpful! I just ordered a 75-300 lens today, and I’m really excited to try it out!
Thank you all again for the help! ☺️Thanks, @blessingscaptured, that’s great for me to think about! I have been trying to get good pictures of the flowers around where I live, and I am wanting to be able to zoom in more. I haven’t used the wide-end of the lens near as much.
If you take portraits, do you ever use your zoom lens while taking them? Or would you just use a 18-55mm? 😅
