How do you change the dpi in Lightroom Classic?
@dotremain, this area is not my forte, but I don’t think the dpi is something that you can adjust when exporting as DNG. I’ve attached a screenshot of the export settings for DNGs. If you’re seeing file properties saying the dpi is 96 my guess is that’s talking about the DNG preview, not the actual file. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong 🙂Regardless, if you use the settings as shown in the screenshot, you should be good to upload those to the link on the page for the current assignment! Looking forward to seeing your photo submissions!

I really don’t know what’s going on here with us, I’m not sure if it’s a hurricane or it’s just for summer, and it’s been raining too much and that didn’t favor me for this assignment… but here are some shots that I took advantage of today’s golden hour…

Here are my photos for this assignment! First assignment that I shot with the new camera, and it was so much fun! I also had trouble with the balloons popping from the heat (when they landed in the grass).

It appears that .dng files do not permit setting of dpi, since they are the equivalent of a RAW file.
So, here are my shots for Balloons. Comments / critique welcome. I’m not happy with any of them, and am tempted to go buy some balloons and try again tomorrow…Attachments:

Here are mine! I was so busy with other photography things, that I thought I might have to bow out of the assignment this time. But when I wasn’t busy today, I saw there were 8 hours left to the deadline, and blew up some balloons I had for my Texas heeler boy’s birthday, shot some photos, edited them, and am now submitting them! God blessed me with the time, energy, and motivation to complete my submission for the assignment. 🙂

Oh, and I am sorry- I forgot about what the details said about square photos. I am sure mine can be cropped, though.
At least in my experience, balloons turned out to be a more difficult than anticipated assignment. There are some great entries! I especially liked ones with something on the balloons – smiley face, paw prints, or even simple check marks. I especially like James’ shot with the dark background. I too overlooked the preference for vertical (portrait?) or square photos – until after taking the pictures, of course!
What did I learn from this exercise? Indoor lighting (even on sunny days) is typically insufficient for ISO-100 tack sharp photos. The iPhone camera (XS) I have isn’t high enough quality to do significant crops and still have a good quality picture. Balloons tend to move – the slightest air current.. – and pop! 🙂@dotremain Haha! Reading your message made me smile. Those were wonderful things you learned, and so funny how we both overlooked the crop orientation directions!
About the ISO, you don’t have to do 100. Try 800 or 1600 (or even 3200 as I did for the indoor shots) and remove the noise in post production (editing). I am not sure if your iPhone camera can shoot in RAW, though. I think RAW noise is smoother to remove than JPG noise?
@dotremain, my apologies for not answering your question from Friday before the assignment ended! Thankfully, the resolution of a photo has no bearing on how it is viewed on a screen. The low-res photos you uploaded here at 96ppi would have looked the same if you had exported them at 240ppi, or 72ppi.
However, it would be different for printing, so if you wanted to send a photo off to print, it would be good to know how to set the ppi in LR Classic. You do that when exporting the photo as anything but DNG or Original. See attached. For printing, I would change this to 300ppi.
And for your knowledge, @lydiabennett, ppi is actually not something that can be set when exporting as DNG (as seen in the screenshot you provided). At the moment, I’m not sure why the properties of a DNG say “96dpi”, but I’m assuming that is the default ppi for DNGs, set either by the camera or Adobe.
At any rate, I’m glad you got to submit some photos, @dotremain! I feel that way with just about every assignment; “I think I know how to shoot this pretty well….” and then it becomes a grand learning experience! That’s what makes these assignments so wonderful.
