I may be doing a portrait photography session for a family we know. Does anyone have any tips on positioning people for the photos?
February 15, 2018 at 12:46 pm #29000Eliana FranzenburgParticipantAre you doing individual shots or just groups? How many people is there going to be?
February 15, 2018 at 1:59 pm #29001Ryan MadarisParticipant@elianafranzenburg, five people, and I probably will be doing individual and group.
February 15, 2018 at 3:39 pm #29003Eliana FranzenburgParticipantOkay, For individual portraits just keep in mind the rule of thirds so if the person is facing left keep their head on the right of the frame etc. I don’t have very much experience with groups but something I’ve found that helps keep it organized looking is to create diagonal lines with peoples heads and also triangles if that makes sense. 🙂 Try not to have just a straight line of faces, so like have some people standing, some sitting, and so on.
Hope that helps!
This is just some things I have learned through lots of trial and error 🙂February 15, 2018 at 5:39 pm #29004Ryan MadarisParticipant@elianafranzenburg, thank you for the insight!
February 15, 2018 at 6:58 pm #29006Caitlin ComptonParticipant@rmadaris, I don’t know how much time you have or anything, but this book could have some helpful tips for you. I really like it plus the content is clean, though I can’t remember if it talks heaps about arranging group shots. Still, I think you’d find it had some helpful tips! 🙂 https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Guide-Portrait-Photography-ebook/dp/B009375Q32
Plus, there’s this book https://www.neelymarketplace.com/product/30-tips-for-perfect-family-photos/ which I know talks about arranging groups. I have it and it’s really good. 🙂
Hope the photo-shoot goes well!

Those are the ones I’d recommend too! I’m really hoping I can find more.
February 17, 2018 at 2:02 pm #29048Ryan MadarisParticipantThank you! I’ll look into those books. As far as I know, the photoshoot will take place sometime in March.
February 17, 2018 at 4:33 pm #29054Caitlin ComptonParticipantNot a problem, @rmadaris!
@jamesstaddon, yes I hope to find more good books, too. It’s just so hard to find them. 😀 -
