Lewis FamilyParticipantFirst of all, Photos is pre-loaded on Apple products. It is a middle-of-the road app. Good for what you may want (especially since it’s free) but its far short of what high-end editors use. On the other hand, Affinity Photo (for Apple or PCs) was developed in 2015, by a very large team of software and photo experts who were fed up with Photoshop’s lock on on the market. It earned Apple’s app of the year award with the first edition, which is pretty prestigious. Do a quick search and you will see it is rated equal to and in some cases better than the full Photoshop! And, what’s incredible is it is all for a one-time $49.99. Photoshop no longer sells their software outright. It is only available by monthly (very costly for you) subscription. Not sure what it is now. Surely, people are going to jump on what I said with a variety of comments for and against. But check it out on your own and see…be sure to get the advice of two or three other Apple users. By the way, Affinity isn’t the only photo editor, but it’s a favorite among Apple users.

Lewis FamilyParticipantI believe your post processing made the second picture quite a bit better. The clarity of the log brings out its time-worn beauty. And, the depth of field is very good. Unfortunately, the rain/mist doesn’t have enough definition to tell what it is. The obvious problem with picture is too much blank, blue rain/sky in the center. The length of the branch forces you to raise the lens to capture all of it. That leaves almost half of the picture with no meaning. (I would be tempted to break off the branch half way up. Some may think this makes it unnatural, but it’s no different than holding a tree branch out of the way to get a good angle for a shot.) However, if you could have somehow used a ladder or top of a car/truck bed and taken the picture from a higher angle, you might have been able to see less of the sky and bring in more or the ground. One last thing is that the various angles are not complimentary. The dominant branch, the rest of the log, the ground and the slope of the ridge of the hill look too random and disorganized. From all that you said, it’s obvious that you worked hard on the picture and seriously considered composition resulting a lot of good elements.

Lewis FamilyParticipantI don’t recall changing anything. However, since one other member is reporting same thing, I suspect it’s not just me.

Lewis FamilyParticipantI use Affinity, and find that it is extremely capable. As pointed out before, it was Apple’s app of the year in 2015. It’s fully compatible with Apple and Windows. I agree that the pictures on some of their sample illustrations are a little “garish” as you stated. The price is a one-time fee and includes updates. That means no monthly charges to get a capability that some say exceeds PS. But, check the demos and judge for yourself.

Lewis FamilyParticipantBeautiful colors! I was on the ground in Cambodia last year with Christian Aid Ministries (CAM). And, I was there overhead dropping bombs on Cambodia from a B-52 45 years ago during the Viet Nam war. When CAM asked if I would go last year, I just knew I had to do it. As we ministered in villages, far from the cities, I asked those beloved people if they would forgive me for what I did dropping 750lb bombs all over the eastern part of their country. Those who knew what I was talking about forgave me. It was a very moving time. I had a blessed and memorable opportunity to hug an old village man who lost one leg, an arm and an eye stepping on an explosive device 20 years after the war. My visit was special and so are the lovely people of Cambodia. I too got some great pictures.

Lewis FamilyParticipantIf you’re planning to stay connected to Lenspiration, keep in mind that James uses Lightroom, which is a subset of Photoshop, the industry standard for years (although there are now others with similar capabilities). You may find that very helpful when asking questions on Lenspiration or watching the periodic photo critique Webinars that James hosts. On the other hand, it’s pricey in that both are only sold through a monthly subscription which will run you $120 a year or more. If you are an Apple user as I am, nothing beats Affinity. Apple named it their software app of the year in 2015. It is every bit as capable as Lightroom with many features that will even match or exceed Photoshop. It’s a one-time $50 cost. Regardless, do your homework, carefully compare features and find what suits you best. Once you get used to it, you’ll find it hard to switch to something else.

Lewis FamilyParticipantNicely done. But, the first thing that strikes me is the icecicles aren’t vertical. Also, using all caps in the verse seems to detract from the beauty of the words. Like Hannah, I wonder “how did you do that?”

Lewis FamilyParticipantOk. I’m going to take a big risk and step into this photo critique in my role as a father of seven children. When a man looks at this picture, his eyes do not immediately go to the Bible, even though they should. If what I’m referring to doesn’t raise a big caution flag, then I ask that you talk with your mother. If she doesn’t understand, I know for sure your father will. God’s blessings be upon you as you continue to shoot for His honor and glory!

Lewis FamilyParticipantHonestly, had I not seen the title, I would not have known those were ants. You could have gone in a bit closer with a different lens or by moving in. There is also plenty of room on the picture to increase the size of the flowers with editing. So, since you probably can’t redo the shot, try cropping away the outer parts of the picture all the way around which should increase the size of the center of the picture showing more detail. You didn’t give the camera settings, which is always helpful, but if you used a low ISO, you should be able to get a bit closer to the flower without a loss of clarity.

Lewis FamilyParticipantPicture didn’t show up. Like most of us first time or two you’ll discover the file size is too large. Max file size is 2048kb.
