I was hiking along the coast at Perdido Key State Park, when this Sanderling caught my eye. Darting back and forth avoiding the oncoming tide, he was quickly capturing tiny sand crabs and eating them as fast as he possibly could. I got my camera and 300mm lens out of my backpack, and sat down on the shore as the bird scuttled across the sand, barely paying attention to me. I spent the next 5 minutes taking over 50 photos, until he decided that it was time to leave. When going through my photos, I found this image from when he stopped his hunting to look at me, and I decided that this was the best photo from the shoot.

Ben, thanks! The main reason for the ‘brown-ness’ is that I took this photo back at the end of fall, so the colors were pretty much non-existent. I did edit it, although I could go back and edit it some more. Again, thanks for your insight!

Thanks everyone. I’ve decided that the D7000 will suit me just fine until I decide to upgrade to a more professional camera one day. The D3500 doesn’t have nearly enough benefits to warrant a switch.

@josiahw, it actually is edited slightly. I enhanced the contrast a bit and raised the clarity. I do see what you mean by the road being in the middle. I probably should have put the road to the right of the frame. Thanks for the insight!
Hi Caitlin! Polarizing filters have several uses; they enhance color a bit, and they also can cut down on reflections. I usually use a polarizing filter when shooting waterfalls, or any other body of water that I don’t want reflection on. You can also use a polarizer when there is a blue sky with white clouds, as it will enhance the blue, and make the clouds stand out more.
That said, I don’t use filters that often, so I’m sure there are many other applications!

@clarajohnson, I’ve used several different websites for photography gear. I usually buy used lenses, so I would suggest KEH or MBP. I’ve bought several excellent lenses from each website. You can also check Ebay, just make sure the lens is in great condition before you purchase or make a bid.
Wow! Quite nice! Originally, this photo was really just a snapshot, so I didn’t really put that much into it, but I love your edit! The lens flare is really nice, and the water looks much better as well.
