Blessings CapturedParticipantFor the past year and a half I’ve been using Affinity for all the complicated editing. (And now it’s free to get.) I also use it for lay-out and design work (verse-pics, calendar etc.)
You can even connect Affinity to Lightroom so you can easily open an image in affinity then save it back in lightroom.
Here’s a link that tells about that: https://www.lenspiration.com/forums/topic/connecting-apps-to-lightroom/I’ve been pleased with Affinity and it’s more friendly for working on layout projects then PS.

Blessings CapturedParticipantSmiles take first priority.
Take lots of pictures, in a pinch you can photoshop eyes, or smiles.
Do vertical, and horizon shots, you don’t know what the family may need them for.
Do many different combinations of family members. Dad + Mom, Dad + Girls, Siblings, etc.
Try to get some casual ones of the family interacting.
Do test shots. What I’ll do is as we’re walking to our location I’ll pick one or a couple of the kids and tell them “I need your help to do a test shot”. I use that to get my settings all right. Also it makes the child feel special.
When you’re setting up the main family shot; take your time, checking that you can clearly see everyone’s face.Photographing family (your own or someone else’s) is a great privilege but also a great responsibility.

Blessings CapturedParticipantthank you @dotremain. Those are some excellent things I’ll keep in mind; especially coming from someone who knows what it’s like to lose images.

Blessings CapturedParticipantCongratulations @parrisfamily! That’s exciting to have your picture on the front cover of a book.
I like how light and airy your photos are.

Blessings CapturedParticipantWhen I take portraits I like to zoom in to at lest 50mm and I’ll use 70mm if it can. At that mm people’s faces don’t get distorted and the background has some blur.
Before I had my 24-70mm I used my 18-55mm for portraits just making sure I was zoomed in.
Blessings CapturedParticipantI use my Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 lens 80% of the time. I also have a 18-55mm and a 70-300mm lens. (They’re all the Nikon versions) I’ve found those three cover everything I need.
Think about the pictures you take now. Are you always using 55mm and wishing you could zoom in more? Or do you like the wide-end of lens (18mm) the best?
