Which Cover Do You Like?

by | Jun 20, 2012 | Updates & Opportunities | 12 comments

One of the most enjoyable design projects that I’ve been working on recently has been the layout and design of the very first book that my Dad has ever written: The Power of Music. I have finally reached the last—and perhaps the hardest–step of this monumental and memorable endeavor; after sessions of brainstorming, pages of thumbnails, and hours of working in Photoshop, I now have three potential options for the cover of the book!

Which of the three covers do you like best? The first, second or third?

Obviously Dad will have the final say, but your feedback and critique is valuable in helping us know which cover is more visually interesting to a wider audience. Looking forward to hearing your comments!

Hi James! Great job on the covers. I like them all, but my favorite is the one with the grass and sun.

Okay, I got the thoughts of all of us here right now.

I like the layout the best in #1, the colors and image in #2, and the theme in #3. I like #2 the best, but think that the title should be higher, and perhaps swapped with the subtitle. It just feels awkward to me for some reason. After talking with Mom, I feel that #3 may be the best because it communicates a clearer message.

Mom said at first glance she skipped over #3, but after reading the words she decided that it was the best because it fit better. She also agreed with my general thoughts on the strengths of each.

Dan thought the layout on #1 odd, and liked #2 the best. After pointing out the theme and #3, he also agreed that it may be the best because of that.

    You’ve done a wonderful job here—I’m impressed!

Our family is interested in this book, as we’ve not yet found a book we can share with others on music. When will it be coming out?

    Hi James,

I think that I like #3 the best, with #2 as a close second (or a tie), and #1 in third place.

Ohh…hard decision! They are all really good…

I’d say that the 1st one if my favorite (though 2nd and 3rd are close behind =D)

What’s your favorite, if you don’t mind my asking 🙂

I would say #3 jumped off the page and caught my eye befor any other so I would say #3 is my favorite. With #2 as the one I would pick second.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments!

Benjamin, I appreciate your detailed analysis of the three covers and suggested changes. The plan is to have the book printed and ready by July 1! It might take a little while for it to appear on sale on our family website and other places, but I’m sure it will be available at the Indianapolis ATI Conference at the end of July.

Bethany, it’s hard to say which one is my favorite because I never create a comp that I don’t like. 🙂 But I think I like them best in the order of #3, #1, and #2.
